April 2026 Meeting: A History of the Ox and Bucks Light Infantry

This meeting traces the history of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars at the forefront of campaigns across more than a century, from the Napoleonic Wars to the Second World War.

Objects have been selected from the 14,500 items preserved in the collection of the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock for an exhibition displaying the county’s military heritage as well as items giving an insight into wartime life in the county

Mary became a monarch at six days old, and by the age of twenty-five she had lost three kingdoms, three husbands, and would never see her only child again.   Whether she is to be seen as a murderous adulterer or the innocent victim of all that befell her, Mary’s life is undoubtedly wrapped in tragedy.   Gill White explores her remarkable story and looks at the causes of the failure that led to her execution.

November 2025 Meeting: The Woman who would be Queen

The November meeting is arranged for Wednesday19 November in the village hall at 7:30 p.m. for an illustrated talk by Marie-Louise Kerr on the 12th century woman who would be queen –  who could have been the first woman to be the English queen in her own right.

Matilda was the  daughter and heir to King Henry I, and a grand-daughter of William the Conqueror.   Her claim to the English throne was challenged by her cousin, Stephen of Bloise.   Civil war, known as The Anarchy, raged up and down the country for years.   Noblemen changed their allegiances several times.   Matilda was besieged at Oxford Castle, and has several  and varied connections with this part of the country.

July 2025 Meeting: C S Lewis and J R R Tolkein by Alastair Lack

“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit….”is one of the most well-known opening lines in favourite English novels.    THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS written by J.R.R.Tolkien,  and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA  by C.S. Lewis including The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe,  are known and loved  internationally .The two men were friends for decades, and taught in Oxford for many years.  They  belonged to an informal literary discussion group called The Inklings,  meeting on Tuesday mornings in The Eagle and Child in St Giles, Oxford.

Alastair Lack will outline their lives, beliefs and experiences, as well as the importance of their friendship and their influence on creative writing and readers of all ages.

May 2025 Meeting: Treasures of Upton House by Tony Mawbey

Lord and Lady Bearsted at Upton House were 1930s millionaires, earning their money through the family founding the Shell Oil Company.  In addition to local philanthropic works, they spent their money on a magnificent collection of paintings and china for their weekend retreat.  The artists collected ranged through Bruegel, El Greco, Canaletto, Hogarth, Stubbs and Gainsborough.   The china collection is 18th century English porcelain from the Chelsea, Bow, Derby and Worcester factories, and from Vincennes and  Sèvres in France.

Tonight Tony will show the highlights of his favourite pieces, tracing their history and their place in the collection.   Upton House is now in the care of the National Trust.

Father-and-son team Thomas and George are known over the world as Thomas and George Violin Makers, with workshops in Williamscot. They have a long tradition of making, restoring and dealing in all things double bass. Tom is also an internationally renowned soloist and orchestral player. Together they reveal the traditions and techniques involved in this centuries-old and skilled craft. How do double basses work? Who made the best ones? What tools are used? How do different woods sound? Do different ways of making affect the sound?

February 2025 Meeting: The Notorious Culworth Gang of South Northamptonshire by Richard Blacklee

The true story of a vicious gang of eighteenth century highwaymen and robbers who terrorised south Northamptonshire and adjoining counties for an unprecedented period of fifteen to twenty years. Richard will introduce the leading members of the Culworth Gang and relate the circumstances of their downfall and ultimately what became of them.

He will also explain the location of Culworth  in a historical context and identify where many of the recorded crimes took place.   Could Cropredy have been one of their targets?

Battle Weekend

380th Anniversary of the Battle of Cropredy Bridge. The Sealed Knot will return to Cropredy for a late summer Bank Holiday spectacular. An event that sees hundreds of reenactors take to the battlefield to commemorate and explore the events of 1644. An exhibition is also planned in Cropredy Village Hall. More details to follow.
